Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is an approach to speaking and listening developed by Marshall Rosenberg that focuses on communicating with compassion and clarity. It attempts to find ways to be honest and meet people's needs without the use of coercive or manipulative language. There are NVC workshops offered around the world.
NVC is useful for becoming more conscious of our verbal communication and retraining ourselves to speak more effectively and constructively. In the process, we become aware of how the communication of others impacts us. In the case of experiencing negative impacts, NVC offers effective and honest ways of responding. Since NVC is a relatively widespread and teachable way of communicating, it can be helpful to groups who want to deal with conflict and emotions in a more constructive way.
